Esther Buhler Paxton was born July 25, 1906 at Pretty Prairie (Reno County), Kansas to David B. and Helen (Hansman) Buhler. Following the death of her parents, she became the guardian of five of her siblings. In 1928, she received a bachelor's degree in piano from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma social sorority. She married Edwin M. Paxton on June 22, 1935.
